If you are scared to death about going to the dentist, you’re in good company. The number one reason people don’t take care of their oral health through regular checkups is because they are afraid. They believe that dental procedures are painful, and they don’t want to be in pain.
However, not taking care of your teeth may turn out to be a bigger pain than you think. If you are having problems with your teeth or gums, and you don’t get a checkup, it could end up being far more painful and unhealthy than you pictured.
That’s because poor dental health leads to other problems with your overall health, such as heart disease.
If the thought of a dental visit gives you chills, you’re in luck. There are all types of dental sedation that can be used to relax you and make sure that your dental visits are as pain and anxiety free as possible. You may want to consider these examples of oral dental sedation when planning a dental visit.
What Is Oral Dental Sedation?
Oral sedation usually consists of a mild sedative, such as Halcion or Valium. You usually take the pill about an hour before your appointment. Oral sedation does relax you, and it may make you a little sleepy. We have had patients fall asleep during dental exams before, because they are so relaxed.
Depending on your needs as a patient, we may decide you need a little stronger sedative, which may cause you to fall asleep, but you can be awakened easily. The point is, if fear is the only thing that is holding you back from getting your teeth looked at, we can help.
Not sure which kind of sedation is best for you? Do you think you would benefit from oral sedation? Why not make an appointment to come in and talk with us? We want to make your dental appointments as anxiety free as possible. Give us a call today!
